[The statement is overly simplistic, but she's treading on fragile ground.]

"He's just a boy. Please don't hurt him." I remember it all so well. Should've known better than to challenge Ned Stark to a fistfight.

[ladymother]

You should have. [Her instinct is to answer with sharp words, but she didn't approach him to fall back into old arguments. She sighs, running a hand through her hair in frustration.]

Why are you doing this? Don't make this difficult for the both of us.

You chose to speak to me.

[ladymother]

I didn't expect you to be so petulant. We're not children anymore, Petyr.

True. A child would be far more forgiving.

[ladymother]

And far less bitter. [If he's baiting her, then it's working.]

Sorry to disappoint your sweet tooth. What did you expect? A genial smile paired with "Oh, hi Cat! How's Ned? How are the kids?" Would you have wanted me to lie?

[He wanted to lie. Truly he did. Red wine just has a way of loosening his tongue, and he's downed about a bottle all on his own.]

I wanted you to be civil, at the very least. We were friends long before Ned Stark came into my life.

And yet he's somehow managed to outlast me. Fancy that.

I didn't want you to leave. That was your decision.

It was your father's decision. Catelyn Tully was for too good for my ilk.

[A part of her knew, she supposes. She held on to the hope that Petyr would have moved on by now, that he would have found happiness with someone else's love. But it's apparent that he still holds her in his heart, and she doesn't think time will do anything to change that.]

Is this how you want it, then? To linger in animosity and bitterness for the rest of our lives?

Better that you feel animosity and bitterness toward me than nothing at all.

I don't, Petyr. I thought we could leave the past behind us, but you still want something I could never give -- especially not now.

And I've accepted it. Just not very well.

Surely I can't be the only one who's capable of making you happy.

Of course not. Money fits the bill quite well. Just not as well.
